Past simple — contrast with the present simple


INSTRUCTIONS:
Fill in the gaps with an appropriate subject and a verb in the past; sometimes you need a direct object (a pronoun) after the verb, too.
Do not use contractions in this exercise.
Example:
My father always buys the newspaper on Sundays, but last Sunday he did not buy it.

  1. I usually have breakfast at seven, but yesterday breakfast at half past seven.

  2. We always have lunch during the first break, but last Tuesday lunch during the second break.

  3. She always goes to the swimming-pool on Saturdays, but yesterday to the swimming-pool, to a football match.

  4. They sometimes come to school by car, but last week to school on foot.

  5. We usually do oral exercises in the English class, but yesterday a written exercise.

  6. They seldom have a cheese sandwich for lunch, but last Tuesday one because enough money for a tuna sandwich.

  7. She normally does her homework at home, but yesterday at the library.

  8. He often rides his bike in the evening, but last Saturday it in the evening, in the morning.

  9. We sometimes watch TV in the evening, but yesterday in the afternoon.

  10. My parents usually watch the news on TV, but yesterday to it on the radio.

  11. I usually listen to music after I do my homework, but yesterday to a special programme before my homework.

  12. We hardly ever play music at school, but the day before yesterday at a school festival for an hour.
